Strategic Trends 2023: “The Future of World Order, India’s Foreign Policy, and Nuclear Deterrence”

This discussion will introduce Strategic Trends 2023: Key Developments in Global Affairs, the annual publication of the Center for Security Studies (CSS) at ETH Zurich. The publication analyses key trends in international affairs. Strategic Trends 2023 is the 14th issue in this series. This webinar will highlight three themes covered in this report by the expert analysts:

China, Russia, and the Future of World Order: China and Russia pose illiberal challenges to world order, most visibly at present in Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and in the threat that China poses to Taiwan. Despite recent setbacks, the concept of a liberal international order remains valuable in addressing these challenges.
India’s Foreign Policy: India’s foreign policy seeks to avoid overdependence on any country while leveraging diverse partnerships in a quest for security and status as an emerging major power. Three overarching trends define India’s current foreign policy: the primary goal – and constraint – of economic development, a more complicated strategic environment due to the rise of China, and closer alignment with the US and its allies.
Alliances and Extended Nuclear Deterrence in Europe and the Asia-Pacific: compounding and simultaneous strategic developments in Europe and Asia are placing increasing pressure on US-led alliance systems in both regions to adapt to a heightened nuclear risk environment. They also highlight the role of extended nuclear deterrence in alliance relationships and the deterrence & assurance challenges for the United States as a security provider confronted with the near-term prospect of facing two major nuclear powers – Russia and China – at the same time. This is in addition to threats posed by North Korea.
