Roundtable with US think tankers on the Global Implications of the War on Ukraine
Last Friday, the GCSP, in association with the Swiss Embassy to the United States, convened an insightful roundtable on the global implications of the war in Ukraine for US Think Tankers. The experts provided perspectives across humanitarian, political and peacebuilding dimensions.
In the spirit of the Geneva Peace Week (GPW), the experts explored the question "Facing Cold War 2.0: Is Peace Possible?" The GPW's findings were put into the context of the war in Ukraine, touching upon the four overarching topics of environmental challenges, digital peace, human rights and justice, and counterterrorism. Further, the panel focused on the diplomatic and geopolitical implications for the Global South and the insights into the different perceptions present. The exchanges also highlighted the increased costs of humanitarian assistance and its growing demand leading to widening inequalities. The unprecedented private sector engagement in humanitarian assistance for Ukraine, presenting a potential game-changer, was mentioned. Finally, a concise analysis of the war's political implications was presented, stressing the expected domination of deterrence in European security, a significant arms race and marginalised cooperative security approaches. After outlining potential scenarios that could unfold, the pathways to rebuilding the security architecture in Europe after the war in Ukraine were proposed.
