GCSP commitment to climate action: Our path towards lowering emission and building a more sustainable future
We, the GCSP, recognize climate change as one of the major challenges facing humanity today and a growing obstacle to security, international cooperation and lasting peace.
Climate change isn't just an environmental concern. As temperatures climb and vital resources dwindle, competition for necessities like water and land heats up, sparking new conflicts or worsening existing ones. Climate change and its linked natural disasters can worsen underlying vulnerabilities, from political tensions and inequality to gender-based violence, economic uncertainty, and mass migrations. In already fragile situations, these dynamics can escalate security threats and instability. In essence, climate change acts as a multiplier of existing vulnerabilities, amplifying the risk of conflict, and undermining our efforts for sustainable peace.
Peace, therefore, cannot be achieved in isolation from climate action.
Across the years, we have been integrating the analysis of the nexus between peace and security into all our activities, from executive education courses, to dialogues, to research and events, both from a state and a human security perspective to better prepare professionals, practitioners and forward-looking leaders for future challenges.
Equipped with this understanding and awareness our organization is proud to have incubated the Climate Action Accelerator (CAA) within its Creative Spark, with which we worked to co-construct our roadmap. Amongst our core actions, we would like to highlight our rigorous assessment of our 2019 carbon footprint.
By understanding our baseline emissions, we were able to develop targeted strategies to reduce our carbon footprint and contribute meaningfully to global mitigation efforts.
This roadmap serves as our commitment to tangible action. It outlines our journey from awareness to accountability, tracking our progress towards reducing emissions by 50% by 2030.
Join us in this ambitious endeavor to build a more sustainable, secure and peaceful future! |
