A World in Turbulence – What Future for UN Peace Operations?
An Alumni Insight Event
How will the changing nature of conflict and the war on Ukraine in particular, impact future UN peace operations? What types of missions and operations will be required and possible, if any? What is needed to strengthen the impact of missions in today’s increasingly volatile conflict environments? The focus, scope and character of UN peace operations have already altered significantly in recent years. However, the current acute international political, security, and economic polarization is likely to usher in a new period of further needs for reform and adaptations in the next few years. What will or should UN Peace Operations look like?
In the past two months, the GCSP organized a series of thematic conversations with Alumni on the nature of the evolving international peace and security environment and what impact this is likely to have on the future of peace operations and peacebuilding missions and efforts moving forward. Enlightening discussions and exchanges were held with insightful Alumni in Mogadishu, Nairobi, Bujumbura, Yaoundé, London, and finally, New York.
In anticipation of the International Day of Peacekeeping on 29 May, this Alumni Insight event will provide an opportunity to deepen the conversation further, also welcoming Alumni and the GCSP community from other regions and contexts to contribute and engage. The session will be kicked off by three introductory reflections, before an interactive conversation and exchange with and amongst Alumni and the GCSP community will be facilitated.
Introductory Reflections:
- Ms Annika Hilding Norberg, Head of Peace Operations and Peacebuilding, GCSP
- Lt. Gen. (Retd) Dr Dennis Gyllensporre, Associate Fellow, GCSP; Associate Professor, Swedish Defence University, and Former Force Commander, MINUSMA 2018-2021
- Ms Natascha Hryckow, Associate Fellow, GCSP; and Former Coordinator, United Nations Panel of Experts on Somalia 2020-2021
The next edition will take place on 23 June 2022 at 12:30 on “Disinformation in time of crisis: how should governments and civil society react?”.
This public event is brought to you by the GCSP Community Engagement. It is open to everyone.
