Protecting the Protectors – Challenges and Security of NGO Personnel in Conflict Zones
An Alumni Insight Event
They work in conflict zones and insecure contexts to protect the most vulnerable. At a time when humanitarian workers are regularly the target of attacks, how can we ensure their safety in these fragile operational settings? What are the challenges they encounter? How can risks be reduced in order to avoid the suspension of aid that is so vital to the populations?
This Alumni Insight event will give an overview of the reality of aid workers today and reflections on ways to improve the situation of NGO personnel. Three alumni have agreed to share their experiences and perspectives from different contexts of major ongoing crises in East Africa, the Middle East and Europe.
Guest speakers:
- Mr Ayuen Maluk, Humanitarian worker serving in South Sudan (Alumnus LISC 2018)
- Ms Malena Rembe, Advisor, Consultant, former Country Director, Swedish Committee for Afghanistan and Head of Office, Swedish Red Cross for MENA (Yemen, Syria, Palestine, Iraq) (Alumna ETC 2009)
- Mr Mark Walsh, Negociation Adviser and Analyst, Médecins Sans Frontières, Switzerland (Alumnus NISC 2021).
