Ambassador Alvarogonzález was appointed NATO Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy in 2016. Previously to this appointment, he served as Spanish Secretary General for Defence Policy (Ministry of Defence), Ambassador of Spain to Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Deputy Director for International Economic Relations with Developing Countries (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation). Member of the Spanish Diplomatic Corps since 1987 he served as General Consul in Shanghai, as well as other assignments in Geneva, Havana, Cairo and Madrid.
