Dr. Wahid Majrooh

Dr. Wahid Majrooh is a distinguished leader in Leadership, Global health and politics. He is widely recognized for his leadership during health emergencies in Afghanistan due to conflict and the COVID-19 pandemic. With a wealth of experience spanning various sectors, he has previously served in key positions with national and international institutions, including as Deputy Minister for Healthcare Service Delivery and Political Specialist at the U.S. Embassy in Afghanistan.

Dr. Majrooh is Leadership in International Security Course (LISC) alumni and holds a Medical Doctor (MD) degree and along with three Master's degrees in Global Health Policy (LSHTM), Political Science, and International Security (UNIGE/GCSP). His expertise encompasses a broad spectrum of fields such as leadership, global health, diplomacy, geopolitical analysis, strategic communication, and international relations. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated exceptional leadership in crisis management, particularly evident during his tenure as Health Minister amid the COVID-19 pandemic and political upheaval in Afghanistan.

Despite unprecedented challenges, Dr. Majrooh remained steadfast in his commitment to delivering healthcare services to underserved communities, even amidst conflict and adversity. His unwavering dedication was exemplified by his decision to remain in Afghanistan following the Taliban's assumption of power in August 2021, ensuring the continuity of essential health services at great personal risk.

Dr. Majrooh's contributions extend beyond governmental roles; he is also actively involved in advocacy and capacity-building initiatives. Notably, in response to the Taliban's ban on girls' education, he led online training programs to empower Afghan women and girls. Furthermore, he founded the Afghanistan Center for Health and Peace Studies, based in Geneva, to further promote health and peace in conflict and fragile settings.

Recognized for his expertise and leadership, Dr. Majrooh has served on prestigious international boards, including the World Health Organization's Executive Board (2021 – 2024) and the Global Alliance for Vaccine and Immunization (GAVI). His current role as Executive-in-Residence Fellow at Geneva Center for Security Policy (GCSP) and an Academic Fellow at the Geneva Humanitarian Studies Center presents his realistic and comprehensive approach to the humanitarian and geopolitical complexities of our time and underscores his dedication to addressing the challenges affecting the global health and peace - through both technical and diplomatic efforts.
