10th Zermatt Roundtable on Security Issues in Northeast Asia

From 11 to 13 March 2024, the GCSP and the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) hosted the 10th edition of the Zermatt Roundtable on Security Issues in Northeast Asia. Participants included a combination of government officials and experts from the People’s Republic of China (PRC), the European External Action Service, Japan, Mongolia, the Republic of Korea (ROK), the Russian Federation, Sweden, Switzerland, and the USA.

Similar to previous iterations, the main purpose of the roundtable was to facilitate open and informal discussions on the evolving security environment in Northeast Asia. The thematic sessions focused on global and regional security trends and their increasing interconnectedness, the implications of the 2024 elections for regional security, and the key security dilemmas dominating today’s Northeast Asian geopolitics. Roundtable participants also discussed the feasibility of establishing a more permanent security mechanism in Northeast Asia.

The dialogue was facilitated by GCSP Director, Ambassador Thomas Greminger, Mr Paul Dziatkowiec, Director of Mediation and Peace Support at the GCSP, and Dr Linda Maduz, Programme Manager for Asia at the GCSP.

The GCSP, jointly with the Swiss FDFA, remains committed to offering this dialogue format as a platform for open and substantive discussions on the security situation in the region.
